“Most people don’t realize that there are really two Avatar themes in Avatar - the one you’re asking about and the melody that enters after the four elements are introduced in the main title. The first one I see as attaching to Aang when he’s harnessing his strength as an individual and accepting his role as the Avatar. I think the French horns serve that emotion well. I also use variations of this theme as a subtle underscore played by strings – usually when Aang is wrestling with his responsibilities as an Avatar and struggling to find that inner strength to fulfill his destiny.” —Jeremy Zuckerman
